The Potter’s House

Since it is a reality, a fact, a sure thing that we are not perfect, it is reassuring that we have someone who is willing to work on us to make us that perfect being He wants us to be.

In the book of Jeremiah, it speaks about the Potter’s House.
“The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.” Jeremiah 18:1-10

The clay was formed with a purpose in mind, the potter’s purpose. God makes it known that He is still sovereign and in control of His universe. He does whatever He wills with His creation. The potter, working so skillfully with the clay, reminds us that God is at work in us for His good pleasure. He wants us to be fit for service.

It is our responsibility to take what He has given us and use it for His glory. Just as the clay finds its highest purpose when it remains flexible in the hands of the potter, so our lives fulfill their highest purpose when we let our Potter have His way with us. We must stay on the wheel, in God’s hands. Paul tells us, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”.

We are just like the clay that was marred on the potter’s wheel.  We become stained and broken in this life and there is only one who can fix us, God. He is willing to put us back together again. Thank God He can restore and make whole.

Are you on the potter’s wheel?  Are you willing to be broken and shaped into that perfect being?  As the song puts it, “Give Him the fragments of your broken life, my friend, the Potter wants to put you back together again!”
