“True Friends”

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

What does it really mean to be a friend, and most importantly, a friend of Jesus? We use that phrase so casually and miss the true meaning of true friendship. There are friends of all kinds today and not many can really be defined as a “true friend”. There are friends that drift in and out of our lives, but we want friends who remain through it all.

So, let’s delve deeper into the real concept of a true friend, a Godly friend.

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” Proverbs 17:17

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

A true friend is a rare gem, hard to find. A friend speaks the truth even when the truth is hard to hear.  A friend is dependable and is willing to sacrifice for the friendship. Godly friends refrain from gossip and seek to build up. Friends sharpen one another, they become better because of a true friend.  They bring strength to one another during trying times.

Like everything else, the purpose of our friendships should be about God. Our friendships should serve Him and His Kingdom. When you are choosing a friend, let God lead you to them. Jesus’ friendship is like no other. If we model this friendship, we will prove ourselves to be a good friend.
